Health Services

The Health Services Department is responsible for planning and administering the direct delivery of Medical, Psychiatric, Dental, Pharmaceutical, Physical and Occupational Therapy Services. Health Services is responsible for the clinical diagnosis and treatment of all individuals who live at the Center. Medical staff and supports assure the highest standards of medical care are provided and maintained at the optimum level.

Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapy develops skills for the “jobs” of daily living. For adults with intellectual disabilities, these activities include how to be more independent by:

Therapists help individuals develop new skills, recommend adaptive equipment to compensate for deficits, and adjust the task and the environment for success and safety. A critical part of OT treatment is the use of meaningful therapeutic activities designed for each individual’s abilities and interests. OT’s provide intensive training in special mealtime management needs of people with intellectual disabilities through the Nutritional Management Program. OT’s also work closely with the consulting physiatrist to address limitations in upper extremity joint movement through splinting, staff training and activities. Physical Therapy

NVTC’s Physical Therapy Staff assist individuals with ambulation, exercise, and therapeutic positioning programs, splinting and bracing, and adaptive equipment. The PT’s and PTA’s work closely on campus and in community settings with all disciplines, to produce creative approaches to serve the people who live at NVTC. The PT Department includes an onsite Rehab Engineer who specializes in the fabrication and repair of adaptive equipment and custom wheelchair seating systems. The Rehab Shop staff work directly with the therapists to help maximize the client’s functional abilities. In addition to providing physical therapy services to our clients, the PT Department provides intensive training to direct care staff through the Physical Management Training Program in the areas of handling, positioning, transfers, and body mechanics. Dental Services

NVTC’s Dental Clinic staffs two Dentists, one Dental Hygienist and two Dental Assistants. In addition to providing inpatient dental care, the Dental Clinic provides specialized outpatient treatment through the Regional Community Support Clinic.

Behavioral Services

The staff of Behavioral Services at NVTC include professionals licensed in Clinical Psychology and Psychiatry, Applied Psychology, Professional Counseling, as well as Board Certified Behavior Analysts. Working primarily from a behavior analytic standpoint, Psychological Services staff conduct functional assessments and functional analyses of problematic behaviors; conduct similar analyses of behaviors that are strengths; and based on these analyses and input from consumers and families, develop treatment and training procedures that address problematic behaviors and teach functional skills. Behavioral treatment program development is available for clients served as inpatients. Behavioral consultation is available for those served as outpatients. Additional services include psychological evaluation, individual, group and family counseling and consultation; program evaluation, and preference assessment.
