Background

The RCSC is the program of the Northern Virginia Training Center (NVTC) that provides a continuum of care for persons with mental retardation. RCSC supports people living with their families and in group homes by providing specialized medical, dental, behavioral, and other clinical services.
The RCSC was initially implemented in July, 1998 as a pilot project to provide services to persons with mental retardation who have transitioned from NVTC or another residential facility to a community residence or who have always resided in the community. The pilot project was very successful and the program is now funded through the NVTC budget.

Who Is Eligible For Services?

RCSC services are available to persons with mental retardation in the Northern Virginia catchment area. This includes the City of Alexandria, Arlington County, Fairfax County, the City of Falls Church, Loudoun County and Prince William County. Residents of other jurisdictions within the Commonwealth of Virginia and persons with other developmental disabilities are considered on a case by case basis.

Services Available through the RCSC include:
Behavioral Consultation
Dental Care
Medical Consultaton
Nursing Consultaton
Nutritional Consultation
Occupational Therapy Consultation (Including Sensory Integration Assessment)
Physical Therapy Consultation
Psychiatric Consultation
Social Work Assessment
Speech and Hearing Consultation
Therapeutic Recreation (Aquatic Therapy and Special Olympics training)
Except for Dental Services which may be ongoing, services are provided based on a consultation model.

Who Provides the Serivces?

Services are provided by members of the clinical staff at NVTC. These are professionals who have expertise in working with persons with mental retardation.

Where are Services Provided?

Some services are provided at NVTC and some are provided at the client's home or worksite, depending on the type of service and the individual situation.

Referral Process

Referrals are initiated by the case manager from the Community Services Board (CSB) completing a one page referral form, a Patient Registration form and a Consent to Exchange information. For some services additional forms may also be requested.

Training

Another function of the RCSC is to provide training for community service providers to enhance their skills and increase their willingness to provide services for persons with mental retardation. Training opportunities are also available through internships and externships.
