Nursing Consultation
The Nursing department at the Northern Va. Training Center embraces the professional responsibility to collaborate, mentor, and provide specialized health care to individuals with Mental Retardation/Developmental Disabilities. This commitment extends to the public in articulating and demonstrating the value of nursing. Nursing services is able to provide RCSC clients with nursing physical assessments, medication monitoring, individualized teaching plans for chronic and acute health care illnesses and preventative health care maintenance monitoring.
Nutritionist/Dietitian Services
- Screen for adequacy of dietary intake using food intake diaries or interview of client/staff/family.
- Assess menus for nutritional adequacy and provide recommendations as needed.
- Review medications for possible nutrient/drug interactions; make suggestions relevant to medication administration.
- Assess weight; suggest desirable weight range and incremental goal weights.
- Recommend strategies to aid in health maintenance, which may include recommendations for: weight management, physical activity, dysphagia management, medical nutrition therapy, adjustments to dietary plan to meet physician ordered therapeutic diet, enteral feeding techniques, etc.
- Provide general nutrition education to include strategies for menu development, food preparation and portion control.
- Assess adequacy of food safety procedures.
- Make referrals to other health care professionals and specialists as needed.
Therapeutic Recreation
Aquatic Therapy
The Aquatic Recreation Therapy Program is one of the programs offered through the Regional Community Support Center (RCSC) at the Northern Virginia Training Center.
The pool is located in the gym at the Northern Virginia Training Center, 9901 Braddock Road, Fairfax, VA 22032.
The program offers the use of the therapeutic pool (88-92 degrees F) for recreation, relaxation, aquatic therapy and/or exercise. Both individual and group sessions are available. A trained aquatic recreation therapist/certified lifeguard is present at all times and will provide assistance and instruction as needed.
Admission to the program is obtained through a referral to the RCSC at the Northern Virginia Training Center. These referrals can be made by the person's case manager at their local Community Services Board or by calling the RCSC Coordinator, Leslie Katz, at 703-323-4021.
There is no charge for the program. Donations are accepted but not required.
